you know you've found true love for a story when you go out and pay $15 for the abridged audio version of it. :P Also, we you have the urge to try and read one of the books it's a homage to, even if you've never wanted to read said book before, means a books really touched you. *g*

Speaking of books, it looks like we're tied between Andrea Norton's The Gift of Asti and Sir Conan Doyle's A Study in Scarlet for the reading club poll. It'll be open until 6 pm tonight, if anyone else wants to participate and vote on what book we read.

Today is [livejournal.com profile] airgiodslv's birthday! I hope you have a happy and lovely day!

The reading club poll is still showing a tie between Norton and Doyle.

If there's not a definitive winner by 6 pm, I'll make a final decision on which one we're reading.

also, [livejournal.com profile] kimberlyfdr is the only one who's submitted a club name suggestion (hee!), so if you have a preference now would be the time to submit it. :D

finally, does anyone have any suggestions/ideas on how to come up with reading club questions for the discussion? having never done this before I haven't a clue.

So the reading club poll is now closed.

As I expected, no one came in to break the tie, so I've decided our first story will be Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's A Study in Scarlet. Here is a link from Google with different resources to get this story free online: http://www.google.com/search?num=50&hl=en&newwindow=1&client=firefox-a&channel=s&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=2IY&q=%22a+study+in+scarlet%22&btnG=Search

I'm using the copy here: http://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/d/doyle/arthur_conan/d75sc/complete.html

But here is PG's versions: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/244

Please feel free to use any version you would like.

After having thought it over, I've decided to go with simple and easy, se we are officially "The Slashfan Reading Club" and here is a graphic I made that I'd like to use when we host our discussion (please feel free to hot-link to this graphic if you host the discussion in your journal):

The official tag is sfrclub. I'm going to go back and tag all the prior posts about the club for easier finding.

As for March's selection, I wanted to let everyone know that while all the options I choose for March were in the public domain, and thus free, I don't expect every month's selection will be so. At the same time, I know sometimes finances won't allow all members to purchase the month's selection. If you can't participate, for finances or any other reason, please feel free to just say you can't participate for the month as I don't want to cause embarrassment for anyone.

Finally, I am thinking of the following for the club discussion time frame:

  • 1st day of the month begin reading book.

  • 1st Sunday of the last full week, we select the next book/theme/etc and decide who will host discussion, if someone other than me wishes to do so.

  • Last Sunday of the month, discussion opens and everyone starts talking.

I think that's it. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks again to everyone who's joined and here's hoping we have lots of fun and great discussions!
