So, to help make the reading club a bit more fun, I've decided to post a weekly question to get people talking about their book.

Today's question: What Terry Pratchett novel did you pick to read and why?

I chose... )

So, after having a three way tie this month, I've decided to pitch the Pratchett idea and we'll read Dick and Jane for the month...April Fool's!!!

Since it's just so hard to pick, I've decided to do something different this month. Instead of having one Pratchett book, anyone joining in for April can select which ever Terry Pratchett book is their favorite and I'll post a series of general questions and let each person talk about specifics for the book they choose.

As for me, I think I'm actually going to re-read Witches Abroad! How about everyone else?

P.S. March's discussion is still open. I've decided not to close the discussions (for those who may not get to read them until later and want to post about it). So, if you've read A Study in Scarlet and wanna talk about it, go here!

So, it's FINALLY time to start talking about March's book; A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle!

Just a few things about the discussion:

1. Please remember to be courteous to all members and not start a flame war on my LJ.
2. I will post the main discussion questions in this post. If you want to start your own discussion in this thread, please comment to the main post w/the following in the subject line of the comment, "New Discussion: [insert question or summary of discussion]"
3. Have fun! :D

Since I couldn't decide on a particular book, I've decided to go w/a selection of works by one of my favorite authors, Terry Pratchett!

This poll will be open until 9 pm EST on Saturday, March 28, 2009.

Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] softlyforgotten! I hope you have a great and wonderful and happy, happy day!

Ok, so I've tried to figure out what books to put up for April but I'm drawing a blank here. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] solar_cat and [livejournal.com profile] mlrhodes! I hope you both have wonderful and joy-filled days!

Just a reminder that next Sunday I'll open discussion on this month's reading club selection, A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Also, is anyone thinking they want to host April's discussion? If not, that's cool. I just wanted to be sure before I open up the poll for the next book on Tuesday.

So the reading club poll is now closed.

As I expected, no one came in to break the tie, so I've decided our first story will be Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's A Study in Scarlet. Here is a link from Google with different resources to get this story free online: http://www.google.com/search?num=50&hl=en&newwindow=1&client=firefox-a&channel=s&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=2IY&q=%22a+study+in+scarlet%22&btnG=Search

I'm using the copy here: http://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/d/doyle/arthur_conan/d75sc/complete.html

But here is PG's versions: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/244

Please feel free to use any version you would like.

After having thought it over, I've decided to go with simple and easy, se we are officially "The Slashfan Reading Club" and here is a graphic I made that I'd like to use when we host our discussion (please feel free to hot-link to this graphic if you host the discussion in your journal):

The official tag is sfrclub. I'm going to go back and tag all the prior posts about the club for easier finding.

As for March's selection, I wanted to let everyone know that while all the options I choose for March were in the public domain, and thus free, I don't expect every month's selection will be so. At the same time, I know sometimes finances won't allow all members to purchase the month's selection. If you can't participate, for finances or any other reason, please feel free to just say you can't participate for the month as I don't want to cause embarrassment for anyone.

Finally, I am thinking of the following for the club discussion time frame:

  • 1st day of the month begin reading book.

  • 1st Sunday of the last full week, we select the next book/theme/etc and decide who will host discussion, if someone other than me wishes to do so.

  • Last Sunday of the month, discussion opens and everyone starts talking.

I think that's it. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks again to everyone who's joined and here's hoping we have lots of fun and great discussions!

The reading club poll is still showing a tie between Norton and Doyle.

If there's not a definitive winner by 6 pm, I'll make a final decision on which one we're reading.

also, [livejournal.com profile] kimberlyfdr is the only one who's submitted a club name suggestion (hee!), so if you have a preference now would be the time to submit it. :D

finally, does anyone have any suggestions/ideas on how to come up with reading club questions for the discussion? having never done this before I haven't a clue.

Here is the Reading Club poll. It will be open until 6 pm on 2/28/09.

Note: All books listed in the pool can be found for free download at Project Gutenberg

Here's the ideas/rules I've come up w/the reading club. If anyone has other suggestions or comments please let me know. Since this is a short month, I'm gonna post a poll of literature options in a bit so everyone will be able to get started on Mar. 1.

Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] dargie I hope you have a magnificent day filled with happiness and joy! :D

I don't know how I never heard of it before, but I've just discovered NPR's Wait! Wait! Don't Tell me! today and I listed to the podcast of it on the way home and lmao the entire time!

In less funny news, I see that Wendy Richard (aka Miss Brahms from Are You Being Served?) has passed away. :*(

I've gotten good response to my reading club post so I'll take this weekend to come up w/a basic format for your consideration. I've never even been part of a book club so I hope I don't screw things up too much. :P

Speaking of that post, I'm still reading The Thirteenth Tale and enjoying it alot! It's a kind of mystery/fictional biography type tale with wonderful prose and I've got tons of sections highlighted in my Kindle. This surprises me because it's told in 1st PPOV

Speaking of Kindle, as a Kindle owner, I'm a bit miffed at all these people who don't own it/refuse to try it that are bitching about it since the K2 was released. *kicks them* And I'm not even gonna talk about what I think of those owners who say they love it but then bitch about it left and right. *kicks them too*

I purchased The Thirteenth Tale by Dianne Setterfield today and I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit (which is weird for me because it's 1st person POV and I'm not really into 1st PPOV stories overall).

It's got me thinking about how I'd love to be part of a book club but, times and finances being what they are, I know that's not going to happen anytime soon in RL. So, question for y'all, would anyone be interested in being part of a reading club?

I'm not talking about making a community or mail list, btw. I'm thinking more once a month we would decide what book we'd want to read, read it the next month and then at the end of the month, I'd have a post in my journal where we could then discuss the book. Btw, I would be willing to choose online publishings as well as professionally published works too. I wouldn't limit it to a certain genre or type of literature--I'm just as willing to discuss original femmeslash fiction as well as the bestseller from the New York Bestseller list. Which I think would be good for both the broadness of the reading options we would have and easy on the pocket books.

So, any takers?
