Here's the ideas/rules I've come up w/the reading club. If anyone has other suggestions or comments please let me know. Since this is a short month, I'm gonna post a poll of literature options in a bit so everyone will be able to get started on Mar. 1.

Guidelines:

1. Be polite.
2. Discuss but have fun.
3. Not to be a critism on technique but can discuss how technique plays into the way the story affects the reader. Ex. "The way this sentence is structured helps contribute to the feeling of ..." as opposed to, "This sentence needs to be here and the proper grammatical form is... and I think s/he spelled this word wrong..."
4. No requirement to "join" anyone who wants can contribute. If you carry the discussion into your journal/blog that is fine but please comment so we can go contribute if we want.
5. While we will be talking about what we read, I don't expect everyone to be an expert in the area of literature (esp. since I'm not one), but if you are, please be patient with those of us who aren't when we're discussing the text and don't have the correct vocabulary to use during the discussion.

Discussion:

[livejournal.com profile] xaritomene suggests that we take turns selecting the reading material and hosting the discussion for that book in our own ljs for that month. I am happy to do this but for those who don't want to host, or can't host a discussion in their lj for any reason, I'm perfectly fine to host the discussion in my lj for them.

Another option is for whomever is hosting the discussion for the month to have a poll and let the group decide what to read. For the first month, I will do this and then we can go from there on what to do for the following month(s).

Material:

Note: I'm not sure what the actual academic terms are for referencing/discussing books, but when I say "text" I mean both written and non-written forms of literature.

The great thing about being a fan is that I'm exposed to all kinds of literary sources. So, I don't want to just pin us into word-only sources. If someone wants to select a graphic novel/manga or choose an "audio" source that is fine with me. The other thing, because we are fans, if the group decides/host selects a fanfic, I'm perfectly willing to go w/that selection too as long as we can discuss it in the same way we can non-fannish materials. Finally, I was thinking that we can also have a "theme" month where instead of the group selecting one text, we might select a type of text and then post their selection and, during the discussion time, we talk about how the text fit in w/the theme.

Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] dargie I hope you have a magnificent day filled with happiness and joy! :D
